Energy Vault's EVx energy storage system is comparable to pumped storage, using grid-scale renewable energy to drive motors when in sufficient supply and lifting 30-ton heavy block (instead of water) six-arm crane towers to certain heights. These blocks are lowered when it is time to send power back to the grid, harvesting kinetic energy.
Energy Vault, a Switzerland-based supplier of gravity energy storage systems, has announced that it will build five energy storage projects in China with a total storage capacity of 2 GWh.
The company said the projects would rely on its EVx gravity energy storage technology, and that it would work with Atlas Renewable Energy of the United States, Chinese nonprofit EIPC, China's Jacaranda Telecommunications and selected unnamed provincial and local governments to build them.
